Our Happenings

Changes are happening in 2013 for the Marotta family! We say goodbye to Cape Verde in April, then head to Washington, D.C. for a couple months while Tom receives training for his next assignment. After a month of vacation, Tom will leave for Baghdad for a year (with several visits home) while CJ and Emily will live in St. Petersburg in our new house. After that? Who knows!

Exciting Finds in Praia

Hi, friends and family.  First off, CJ is getting teeth.  She's been teething for well over a month now, and finally those little suckers are coming in on the bottom.  I didn't think teething started until around 6 or 7 months, so I was not prepared at all for this.  Luckily, we had the special teething toys CJ received as gifts from the Dugues!  In particular, she loves chewing the face off a squeaky toy giraffe.  (Thank you, Dugues!)  So, that's happening.

In other non-baby news, we just discovered that one of the stores in our city has prosciutto.  This is a big deal, people.  Prosciutto is basically bacon, and bacon as we Americans know it really does not exist here.  But we found well-refrigerated prosciutto and got it thin sliced - just like in the US of A! I cooked it just like bacon and got it nice and crispy.

THEN, I found avocados, which are not always available here.  The avocados in the bin were purple and green.  I chose a purple one, figuring it was more ripe than a green one.  Who knows.

I opened it up, and it looks like it's a slightly different variety than avocados I am familiar with.  The taste was more mild, but the texture was the same.

So, for lunch today we had prosciutto and avocado sandwiches.  It was wonderful.  Any day we can be a little gourmet in Praia is a good day.  The end.

  2. Where else? Your wonderful, wonderful store. It might have always been there, but we just realized it.

  3. Just curious, not trying to keep track of where you buy things.. haha. Because I know/think Calu doesn't have it (sliced to order) and I was wondering if some other random store around Praia started to slice it. Just curious. Hope things are well.

  4. I will also look into getting some "american style" bacon and sending it. No promises.

  5. Bacon bacon bacon!!! I really can't imagine any other store around here carrying Presunto, thin-sliced. Pretty sure you have the market cornered on that one. I don't know if I'd make it too long here without your store. In fact, we're heading there now!
